Main text dated the 17th of February, 1817 had been dispatched, I have received, from war assessor Didrichsen a notarized copy of his commission as captain of the defense schooner Fikke. As, in this he really is assigned rank of captain in the militia, and that circumstance considerably alters the point of view from which I had to view his most humble application as regards his bona fides, I haste, as required by truth and impartiality to report same to Your Royal Majesty.-

Main text By submitting, to Your Royal Majesty, the attached note from the commandant on St. Thomas, chamberlain v. Holten, I must in concurrence with same make the most humble proposal: Namely, that, now that Eagan is dead, the first lieutenant O. Buntzen may most gracefully be appointed captain of 2nd company of the Citizens’ Corps of St. Thomas. That first lieutenant Rio de Ville may most humbly be granted rank and grade as staff captain with ensign of the army. This latest most humble recommendation of mine is not rooted in any presumed suitability of the employment of staff captains where a characterized major is in charge of the company, but because I believe that the company will be better trained by de Ville than the city colonel, the poor proficiency of whom, the St. Thomas Militia gives absolutely clear evidence. –

Main text Most humble declaration on captain v. Einem’s application. Since captain v. Einem quite recently has been granted the command of the company by Your Royal Majesty, I consider the above application immodest as well as I generally must deplore that discontent and craving for rank without any particular entitlement is increasing within the circle under my observation. The alleged anomaly which would occur in the absence of the commandant by the fortress commander being merely a captain
