Main text | we could not avert with the schooners remaining here, and as the purpose of the war vessels, next after the protection of the coasts against insult, is to further lawful trade and thereby also enhance the earnings of Your Majesty for approximate defrayment of the costs of the armaments, and as it additionally certainly will produce a good effect that a vessel as considerable as the frigate Minerva is regularly seen along the continental coast I have believed myself bound to allow it, with some changes in course, to repeat its cruise to the environs of the river Magdalena.- Additionally, the frigate will, under usual circumstances, return in 3 to 5 weeks, and should it, according to the intelligence and further insights in the matter received upon its return, be found desirable to establish a permanent protection between the coast and St. Thomas, there will, on that occasion, be submitted a most humble proposal.- |

Main text | Most humble report! Second lieutenant a la suite Philip Hage, whom I under date of the 16th of April have granted travel permit, is departing on the vessel Christiansted, captain Palludan for Copenhagen.- This young man is not entirely without ability and has a good appearance but for lack of diligence and attention, he has failed to meet the expectations I once had of him. Since he is young and accordingly yet possibly may be shaped into a useful officer, I dare to pray that as a real grace for him, that he may, during his stay at home, be employed to do garrison duty under a strict and capable company commander.- |
